The Order of Solace Handmaidens’ pleasure and purpose is to provide their patrons with absolute solace. Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t always involve shagging. Tranquilla Caden is more of a glorified cleaner/server/assistant at first, but yes, there is eventual shagging between Quilla and her patron, after they’ve fallen in love…

This series must’ve been bloody difficult to market. It reads like an historical, though it’s set in a fictional place that sounds a lot like nineteenth-century England. The concept is a made-up religion/spirituality, which can sound like a slave/hoor mash-up. It’s a romance, even though the love interest is a pain in the arse, and the heroine is a Mary Sue in the vein of Mary Poppins (practically perfect in almost every way). There’s alchemy, but only vague references to vials and crystallised-something. The patron’s wife is a predictable antagonist who seems to be faking her madness. The patron’s half-brother is supposedly charming, but I find him to be an annoying douchebag. The manor’s staff speaks lower-class, but of course dear Quilla is above that…

Slow-going though it is, the novel definitely has saving graces. Florentine is an awesome character, and has much more personality than Quilla. The alchemy is only hinted at, and would’ve been fabulous with more detail. And the scandalous dinner party during a brannigan (did anyone else get Laura Brannigan’s “Gloria” in their head?) is a delight.

But romances only appeal to me if I like the characters, both individually and together. Unfortunately, No Greater Pleasure doesn’t fit that bill.
