Yeah, I know: I’ve declared that there’s a special hell for parody novels. Well, here’s the exception: Fanny Merkin’s Fifty Shames of Earl Grey. It has not changed my view on parodies in general – this book is the exception, and not the rule.

No, I haven’t read E. L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey, but I know enough of it to get by. And Earl Grey saves me from having to read the trilogy – all the good bits (I’m guessing) are in here. Besides, I’ve read Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight, so I made the parallels easily and wasn’t lost.

Anyhoo, because I’m lazy and couldn’t be bothered writing a proper review, here are my random thoughts whilst reading Fifty Shames of Earl Grey:

-I take it “making sandwiches” was a common phrase in E. L. James’ book?

-Earl Grey perpetuates my theory that only douchebags like Nickelback.

-Anna thinks Earl Grey is gay. He denies it. No reference yet to a particular Katy Perry song: “You’re so gay, and you don’t even like boys…”

-Ah, Warrant – did they ever release a second song?

-Earl Grey removes his bra – a salute to Ke$ha’s “Blow” filmclip?

-Jin talks of a pony pulling a thorn from a manticore’s paw. Reminds me of a South Park episode wherein lions make Token remove thorns from their paws – the lion version of “pull my finger”.

For more randomness, here is how I imagine a Fifty Shames of Earl Grey film:

-Animated, of course – the hotel room service scene is so Homer Simpson, or maybe Peter Griffin.

-Director: Seth MacFarlane.

-Voices of:
-Jason Lee as Earl Grey (the only other Earl I’m familiar with is My Name Is Earl)
-Drew Barrymore as Anna Steal (Anna’s so dim, she reminds me of Family Guy‘s Jillian)
-Your favourite chronically drunk celebrity as Kathleen – let’s say, Rihanna
-Token ethnic as the token ethnic Jin – let’s say, John Cho
-Betty White as Earl’s mum

In short, Fanny Merkin’s Fifty Shames of Earl Grey is thoroughly entertaining, and even sparked my creativity (see above). So looking forward to Fifty Shames in Space!

  1. Thanks for reading, glad you enjoyed it. “Making sandwiches” wasn’t in “Fifty Shades of Grey,” but it was the silliest euphemism that my editor and I could come up with. And I haven’t seen that South Park episode, but I’ll have to check it out!
