After a plague of vampires was unleashed in the world, Katie was kicked out of the safe haven of her Amish community for her refusal to adhere to the new rules of survival. And yet through this darkness come the shining ones: luminescent men and women with the power to deflect vampires and survive the night. But can they be trusted, and are they even people at all?

Tana lives in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. The only problem is, once you pass through Coldtown’s gates, you can never leave. One morning, after a perfectly ordinary party, Tana wakes up surrounded by corpses. The only other survivors of this massacre are her exasperatingly endearing ex-boyfriend, infected and on the edge, and a mysterious boy burdened with a terrible secret. Shaken and determined, Tana enters a race against the clock to save the three of them the only way she knows how: by going straight to the wicked, opulent heart of Coldtown itself.

Ever since a devastating nuclear war, humanity has lived on spaceships far above Earth’s radioactive surface. Now, one hundred juvenile delinquents – considered expendable by society – are being sent on a dangerous mission: to recolonise the planet. It could be their second chance at life…or it could be a suicide mission. Clarke was arrested for treason, though she’s haunted by the memory of what she really did. Wells, the chancellor’s son, came to Earth for the girl he loves – but will she ever forgive him? Reckless Bellamy fought his way onto the transport pod to protect his sister, the other half of the only pair of siblings in the universe. And Glass managed to escape back onto the ship, only to find that life there is just as dangerous as she feared it would be on Earth. Confronted with a savage land and haunted by secrets from their pasts, the hundred must fight to survive. They were never meant to be heroes, but they may be mankind’s last hope.

[REVIEW] The Hallowed Ones – Laura Bickle

Since I read Karen Ann Hopkins’ Temptation and Jodi Picoult’s Plain Truth, I’ve been looking for more “Amish with a twist” novels. And The Hallowed Ones is a good one.

I was already a fan of Laura Bickle’s work, but this one takes the cake. The Hallowed Ones is a creepy-cool read, with plenty of suspense and gore to please everyone. I’m not normally one for horror, but this stands along Jennifer Armintrout’s American Vampire as exceptions. Katie is one tough young lady, because it takes massive balls to prepare bodies for burial. Seriously, that scene is bloody scary! Frau Gerlach is awesome – nothing fazes her; she just gets the job done. And I’m fascinated with the Hexenmeister…Katie would be a fabulous Hexenmeisterin.

Basically, I had a great time, and I’m gagging for September’s release of The Outside. You should be, too.

Something murderous is out there. Amish elders make a rule: No one goes outside, and no outsiders come in. But when Katie finds a gravely injured young man, she can’t leave him to die. She smuggles him into her family’s barn – at what cost to her community?
